In most cases, geriatric nurses are working side by side with the family caregivers as they take care of the complex nursing tasks and coordinating with the families of their patients as well.

There are varieties of settings and institutions where geriatric nurses work. These include retirement communities, residential care facilities, and hospitals. There are also geriatric mental health institutions that provide specialized and unique geriatric nursing needs for older adults. Such institution also cares for older adults with dementia. On the other hand, geriatric nurses may also work in home nursing either as visiting nurses or as live-in providers. With this, they are required to have a driver’s license.

Being a geriatric nurse can be emotionally stressful at times since elderly people can be victims of abuse and neglect and in most cases, they are likely to die. Elderly people tend to struggle with various medical conditions as well as financial issues that may contribute to depression and other problems on mental health. All these scenarios create unique challenges for geriatric nurses. Because of these scenarios too, geriatric nurses work very hard to provide loving and respectful care to the elderly patients.

Geriatric nurses may assess the medical problems of the elderly patients if they can perform their daily tasks or activities on their own such as taking medications, walking, and driving. They should know how to determine the health of patients by knowing the medications being taken, the ailments, and the symptoms. In order to do these things, geriatric nurses must have good communication skills through verbal and non-verbal. In addition, geriatric nurses are the liaison persons between patient’s families, patients, doctors, and other healthcare facility professionals.
