Adult Nurse

When it comes to giving proper care patients who suffer from long-term and chronic diseases and require surgery for recovery, adult nurses do the jobs. Their main focus is the entire being of the patients rather than the physical and medical condition. Adult nurses usually work in hospitals and other medical facilities like rehabilitation centers and nursing homes. They may also work in homes of the patients and in community as well.

Since adult nurses spend more time with their patients, they need to maintain good relationship with them as well as with the relatives and family of the patients. They also need to gain confidence and trust of the patients. Adult nurses who work in community-based associations usually do not prefer a hospital environment because they avoid unnecessary travels in carrying out their tasks. On the other hand, adult nurses who work in hospitals are usually assigned in emergency units, accident units, outpatient clinics, operating theaters, or wards.

The common tasks of adult nurses include administering & checking injections and drugs, recording & observing patients condition, and preparing care plans. The nurses are also expected to be available anytime in cases of emergencies. Informing the patients about their health is also part of the adult nurses’ jobs as well as giving relief of anxiety on patients and their family.

Adult nurses work with old and young adults who have medical conditions that can be simple, acute, or post-surgery. They are required to deal with different kinds of complex situations and find solutions from it in caring and medical dilemmas. They usually maintain a schedule of patients because they tend to monitor numerous patients all at the same time. There could be a patient who requires consistency of records and with number of adult nurses working on him. In cooperation with several doctors, adult nurses need to work with radiographers, surgeons, physiotherapist, and countless others.

Since adult nurses have close relationship with their patients and its families, they need to evaluate, implement, plan, and assess care for individual patients. Adult nurses are usually Registered Nurses (RNs). If they intend to advance their career into RN, they can go through RN or LPN program from one of the accredited training centers in the local state.

A good mental condition is also necessary for adult nurses since they are dealing with several kinds of people who are pressured and stressed out, and often show frustrations. It is suggested that nurses have effective communication skills and personal skills that will help people calm in stressed and pressurized conditions. This trait will also help nurses to relate well with people from different cultures and backgrounds. Adult nurses must also have practical skills and ability to remain calm in complicated situations. In order to gain trust, nurses must have the empathy with patients and their families. The confidence to work independently and make decisions is also an important trait that an adult nurse must have. Nurses should also be good at team work and can prioritize busy workloads if necessary.
