Acute Care Nurse

Acute care nurse is a type of nursing job that provides advanced care to patients who have severe diseases. This nursing job is often employed in hospital settings because of its requirements for specialized equipments and working environments to carry out the nursing tasks. It also requires working in shifting hours in order to provide nursing tasks even during nights, evenings, and days. In some scenarios, acute care nurses are required to go on call to hospitals even though most of them are allied with ambulatory care positions. They are also the ones in charge of attending to severely injured patients from emergencies such as disaster or crash.

The main duties of an acute care nurse involve patient care under the supervision of physicians and other health care experts. Acute care nurses cannot practice without the proper certifications and degrees even though they can work in health care facilities, clinics, and other institutions. They are often responsible for doing certain steps that concern health care. Such steps can help lessened the number of days that a patient should stay at medical facilities. The main focus of acute care nurses is to speed the recovery of patients by helping them get better quicker and administering excellent care.

The specialty of acute care nurses does not only lies on giving diagnosis to patients, they are also specialize in educating patients about their medical condition in details as well as providing them with all the information needed. On reality, acute care nurses diagnose patients prior to arrival of the doctors at medical facilities. They usually give examinations for various recording details that are required for proper treatment administration.

Recording of medical history is also part of acute care nurses’ tasks. Along with this task is monitoring and creating record of patients’ ailments, symptoms, and signs. In this way, doctors will determine easily the type of tests such as x-rays, scans, urine & blood tests, and other specialized tests to be carried out on the patients. From these tests as well, doctors based their prescriptions for the patients’ condition.

Acute care nurses may need to develop the treatment course that will be administered on patients. They may also prescribe certain medicines and drugs to the patients. If they feel that the patient requires more specialized type of recovery treatment, they shall advise for professional assistance. Depending on the specializations of the nurses, they may also administer anesthesia in operating rooms, assist in ambulatory & acute care services, and deliveries.

Other duties of acute care nurses also involve treating and managing acute health problems. They need to be there for patients who always ask queries and questions about the different aspects of their condition and treatment.

Because of the important and heavy roles and responsibilities of acute care nurses, their salary is often stable and excessive. However, their salary is often influenced by numerous factors such as the kind of employment sector and its location. The salary range of acute care nurses may also based on setting and departments such as emergency department, surgery, neonatal unit, hospital, gerontology, and specialty setting.
